Operations Associate in Kenya , Kenya

Who We Are

Komaza is revolutionizing African forestry by unlocking the potential for small-scale farmers to serve booming wood markets. By combining high-scale operations with digital intelligence, we are currently planting commercial-grade forests at a rate of over 1 million trees with 5,000+ new farmers per year, making us Kenya’s largest industrial tree planter. We hold the only sustainable blueprint for meeting Africa’s $30B wood supply crisis - by leveraging farmers’ contribution of land and labor, Komaza can access nearly limitless land and establish a hectare of trees for far less than big plantations.

We have been recognized with numerous awards and investments, including The Climate Policy Initiative, The Nature Conservancy, Forbes, and Novastar Ventures.

About the Team

The Forestry Operations Division owns the beginning of Komaza’s value chain including our Nursery, Field Operations, Farmer Relations, Forestry Innovations and Harvest teams. We grow millions of top quality seedlings. We partner with rural farmers to plant and grow thousands of hectares of new woodlots. We sustainably manage the woodlots we’ve planted through efficient harvest operations. We lead research and innovation in technical forestry for smallholder farmers. We leverage data, mobile technology, training, and user-centered business systems to empower rural farmers to become the future of African forestry. We are equally comfortable white-boarding new solutions to complex business problems, digging into excel and GIS, or getting our boots muddy talking to farmers in their fields. Whether you like conducting farmer focus groups, designing business systems, working with big machines or analyzing complex data sets - then Forestry Operations has a place for you.

About the Role

Are you a critical and logical thinker who can design and execute operational systems? Are you excited about designing and implementing systems that support our complex and rapidly growing forestry operations? Then this role is for you! As the Forestry Operations Associate, you will create innovative systems that support the harvest department. Together with the team, you will design and troubleshoot processes to ensure operations run smoothly and cost-efficiently. While the role is primarily office-based, you will travel to the field regularly to interact with the Harvest Team to understand farmer behaviours and identify patterns to support in better decision making. If you’re looking for a role that allows creation of engaging and impactful systems in a rapidly changing environment, then this is the job for you.

What You Will Do
- Build and implement innovative scalable systems to meet harvest operational needs
- Identify problems and inefficiencies in operating processes and materials
- Analyse & report on trends in harvest data to support in decision making
- Collaborate with your team members to create solutions for the harvest department
- Participate in field operations to better understand farmer behavior and patterns

What You Have
- A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field
- At least 2 years work experience in a demanding work environment, preferably in positions where frequent interaction with end-users of systems
- Experience in building operational data systems on large
- Comfortable in working with Excel, Python or GIS or any relevant quantitative software
- Experience in working in the East African region preferred

You’re Also
- Flexible and used to working in a fast-paced informal environment
- Logical, innovative and creative thinker
- Critical thinker that enjoys different challenges
- Collaborative and values teamwork
- Willingness to learn

If you like variety in your work, love learning and you are looking for a role that will allow you to make a real impact and build a successful career, join us! This role is based at our headquarters in beautiful Kilifi, Kenya. The role offers competitive salary and benefits with potential for further career growth.
