We are looking for a Technical Director, to be a member of the Executive Team, who will help the business strengthen its agricultural performance and drive the next generation of growth from 250 to 1,000 farmers over the next 3 years.

The role:
• Responsible to lead all agronomic operations and execution in Ethiopia
• Planning regenerative, multi-crop, year-round production with 250+ out-grower farms, while improving weekly harvest estimations and quarterly production forecasts
• Testing, evaluating and implementing new crops, cutting-edge smallholder technologies, and various engagement models
• Supporting field managers to motivate staff and drive improvements in smallholder yields and farm management
• Rapidly iterating and continuously improving our internal systems and processes
• Involved in all aspects of company leadership, strategy and management

The person:
• A background in commercial fresh-produce farming/growing
• Experience with regenerative or organic growing practices
• Experience leading teams in a dynamic, rapidly changing environment
• An analytical and entrepreneurial mindset
• Experience managing P&L, budgets, and production forecasting

SNV Netherlands Development Organisation supports efforts to develop and implement sound agricultural, agro-industrial and value chain strategies to fight poverty, hunger and malnutrition, while boosting the competitiveness and efficiency of the agricultural and food sub-sectors in a sustainable way.
In its agriculture project implementation SNV adopts a facilitative value chain approach, where smallholder farmers are linked to markets, finance, inputs, equipment, and information through larger commercial farmers and traders who have the capacity and incentive to invest in smallholder production. These linkages build the capacity of smallholder farmers to increase the efficiency of their farm businesses with improved production and post-harvest handling practices.

Position:
We are currently seeking a Value Chain Advisor for our horticulture programs in SNV. The role of the Value Chain advisor is to (1) provide technical back stopping to selected SNV horticulture projects as per project contracts (2) support to strengthen SNV’s global position in horticulture (3) support to develop new business for SNV (4) contribute to develop innovative solutions and coordinate learning and (5) maintain and expand SNV’s relations and partnerships with key horticulture players.
This position reports to the Global Coordinator –Horticulture and works in close collaboration with the Country Sector Leaders, Project Managers, Marketing and Business Development team and the Global Agriculture Sector team.

Responsibilities:
• Support SNV’s horticulture projects in close collaboration with the project managers by delivering short-term technical back stopping for improvements on the implementation of ongoing horticulture value chain projects addressing use of inputs, production practices, post-harvest, processing and marketing priorities through market driven sustainable approaches;
• Work with value chain networks to identify upgrading opportunities, public-private partnerships and other opportunities that support an industrywide vision;
• Manage certain components of projects where required;
• Support design of new programmes and projects relating to agribusiness and value chain development specifically in the horticulture sector;
• Prepare, maintain and update horticulture knowledge agenda, capture lessons learned, stimulate internal and external knowledge exchange;
• Contribute to the collection and dissemination of data and information related to agribusiness, value chain, agro-industries and food systems trends, approaches and impacts, including lessons and good practices; support global learning, exchange of information through the internet and other mechanisms;
• Build, maintain and utilise networks and relationships for on-going and new opportunities with relevant stakeholders in horticulture e.g. companies, research institutions, universities, donors, etc.
• Undertake frequent travel to the projects.

General Qualifications:
• Bachelor degree in horticulture or agronomy and/ or a Master’s Degree in a relevant discipline;
• At least seven years of experience in the agriculture/horticulture sector in an international, multi country context;
• Track record in supervision, advisory work related to production, supply chain management, private sector development and technical backstopping;
• Sound experience of implementing projects;
• Focus on quality and driving for continuous improvement of deliverables in the horticulture sector;
• Proven capacity to work with teams operating at a distance;
• Excellent communication (writing and oral) skills, presentation and debating skills with experience in profiling an organisation in an international setting;
• Strong international networks within the agricultural sector, including Dutch horticulture sector;
• Entrepreneurial, result-oriented and driver for change;
• Broad interest in taking up tasks as they appear in the horticulture projects;
• Fluency in English and French, both oral and writing is required.

Purpose of the position
The holder of this position is responsible for overseeing all the propagation and quality works. He is responsible for decision making in the Propagation and Quality department to ensure safe, continuous and reliable production of cuttings to the Project. Will be managing a team of 24 and 40 people.
This is a great first or second career step after finishing education. A lot of guidance will be offered, the candidate works closely together with the General Manager. In a few years’ time you will be trained to be a great manager.

Summary of daily tasks:
• Leads Propagation and quality Sections to success
• Support the team to collect and analyse production figures and other management information and communicating it to the team and management
• Ensure that protocols and standards in place are followed to ensure sustainability of the business
• Supervising and supporting the team to ensure the health, hygiene and productivity of the plants
• Ensure all protocols are updated and known to all staff
• Provide technical support and insight to the team in order to ensure strong performance against the production goals

What does your job as Operations Manager at Florensis entail?
The Operations Manager is responsible for all operational and growing activities at Florensis Ethiopia and takes care that operations are run efficiently and effectively. You make sure that Florensis Ethiopia delivers high quality cuttings to its customers on time in the right quantities. You are steering an experienced operational management team at an inspiring and motivated way. You will report directly to the general manager and be able to deputize him during absence.

What do we require from you as a Operations Manager?
• A bachelor’s degree in horticulture or agronomics from a reputable institution or similar capacity level through work experience;
• Minimum 7 years of relevant work experience in the same area;
• You have strong communication skills and are an integrative team player;
• Experience in production of cuttings is a pre;
• You have strong managerial skills, and ability to lead and influence at an executive level with respect to the Ethiopian culture;
• Experience with a management position in an African country is preferred;
• You are able to indicate clear goals and are able to motivate others to achieve them;
• Customer oriented in thinking and method;
• You have an excellent knowledge of the English language;
• You have a positive, strong, fair and credible attitude and have excellent analytical and time management skills;
• You are prepared to establish in Ethiopia.
