Job description
The Sunbird Group is a UK incorporated, sub-Saharan Africa focused, integrated construction and support services platform operating in Kenya, Mozambique, Tanzania, Uganda and South Africa.
As Legal Counsel, you will work closely with our commercial, finance and executive team to support our continued growth across a range of jurisdictions and sectors from our Nairobi HQ.
You will ensure that the Sunbird Group operates within the applicable legal and regulatory framework and offer counsel on a variety of commercial and legal matters. Duties and responsibilities

Your duties and responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:
• devise, implement and monitor effective governance, legal and risk management strategies
• draft, negotiate and review legal documentation including:
- debt documentation such as loan agreements and security agreements
- equity investment documentation such as share purchase agreements, share subscription agreements and shareholders’ agreements
- framework and partnership agreements
- preliminary deal documentation such as heads of terms, letters of intent, memoranda of understanding and non-disclosure agreements
- real estate leases and licences
• coordinate and liaise with external parties such as external counsel, public authorities and regulators
• provide accurate and timely counsel in relation to a variety of legal topics including anti-trust law, company law, employment law and litigious matters
• support debt and equity fundraising processes to include document preparation and execution

Job Description
• manage the Sunbird Group’s company secretarial function by providing guidance and ensuring all appropriate documentation and filings are in place
• maintain current knowledge of updates to legislation throughout all jurisdictions within which the Sunbird Group operates
• manage all aspects of M&A processes, including due diligence, structuring, document preparation, document negotiation, acquisition financing and post-completion matters
• coordinate new country expansion including incorporation and regulatory compliance, accounting for the Sunbird Group’s overall corporate structure Person specification
• Excellent academic credentials (minimum 2:1 or equivalent)
• Common law qualified lawyer (Kenyan, South African or UK)
• Training from a leading law firm
• Corporate/commercial background
• Two to three years post-qualification experience

In June 2017, we were awarded three of the four prizes by the Global Center for Youth Employment in NYC, for the most promising solution to youth unemployment globally. Our suite of products seeks to satisfy a breadth of consumer needs, which provide multiple channels to increased incomes for workers:
- Lynk Requests: A marketplace product enabling customers to request services in over 75 categories from cleaners, to masseuses, to plumbers, and tailors, and receive shortlisted bids.
- Lynk Discover: An e-commerce product enabling workers on the platform to sell ready-to-buy products or services.
- Byld: A tech-based platform for the recruitment and management of workers on large construction sites.

Byld is new product being launched by Lynk, enabling employers to recruit and manage large amounts of workers on building and construction sites. It seeks to provide a career identity for workers, whose profiles grow over time through the jobs they do. Byld has the potential to increase the regularity of work and incomes for the millions of informal workers in the construction sector across Africa, while improving productivity for construction firms. The product has applicability beyond the construction sector too, and we have interest from a number of companies in using the underlying technology for the recruitment and management of day labourers.

​Lynk recently agreed on a partnership to pilot the Byld platform in Kenya, and is seeking a Consultant to spearhead the pilot, product development and business model. This consultancy has a high chance of transitioning into a fulltime role if the consultancy/pilots go well.

- Recruit an assistant to support in consultancy activities.
- Work with Lynk’s in-house construction team to adapt the existing prototype for practical rollout
- Work with engineering team to develop live app v1: Based on feedback from above, ensure that app v1 contains the right features & UX.
- Test App on Lynk-managed construction sites, and iterate.
- Lead partnership with partner(s) to adapt Byld product for external partnerships.
- Design & manage partner pilot: Design modality for pilot & questions to answer. Oversee the on-the-ground piloting, which maintain strong partnerships with the pilot partner while providing valuable insights into the product.
- App enhancement: Based off pilot(s), work with engineering team to implement adjustments to the app for change.
- Business model development: Flesh out business model canvas and propose pricing and operational model for Byld product.
- Relationship mapping & development: Identify further partnerships to grow the Byld initiative.

The consultant will be paid on a monthly basis at a fixed rate commensurate with experience.

- MBA (or related field: Social Enterprise, Human-Centered Design, etc.).
- Entrepreneurial personality / self-starter – able to take responsibility and undertake tasks with minimal supervision.
- Experience conducting market research, product design, and/or business modeling in Kenya.
- Excellent writing and presentation skills.
- Knowledge of construction sector a major plus.
- Flexible work attitude: ability to multi-task in a fast-paced and quickly evolving work environment.

Job Function
Under general supervision, provides a high degree of sophistication and expertise in the performance of varied and highly complex computer-assisted drafting and design work to support the technical services of the company. Performs independent design work on CAD.

Job Duties:
- Uses CAD system to enter the required data, such as precise measurements and commands, in order to generate designs, construction drawings, renderings, report graphics, interior drawings or other digital images.
- Develops, organizes and prepares a variety of highly complex layouts, drawings and designs from written or verbal specifications, or from rough or detailed sketches and/or drawings made by technical professionals, converting paper documents into computerized files.

Diploma/College degree in related technical field. CAD training required. Generally, requires minimum 5+ years of related experience in a combination of technician and/or CAD/CAD Revit is essential. MEP (Would be adventurous). May also require experience in the particular discipline supported. Experience within a consultancy or Project based role.

Excellent technical judgment and interpersonal skills; ability to work independently and to give work direction to others. Strong math skill, manual dexterity and computer user skills required. Expertise in CAD production technologies required.

Our client started two steel processing plants in Pointe Noire August 2014. They collect steel scrap locally and process the steel used in reinforced concrete.
