I am a UK qualified ACCA Finance Director/Controller with 30 years experieince who has been working in businesses operating in Africa since 2005 with residential roles in South Africa and Nigeria.
I have experience in setting up finance functions and systems and managing finance teams in Nigeria, Ghana, Libya, Egypt and South Africa.
I have worked in an expanding commodity inspection and testing business (providing services to oil, agriculture and mining businesses) helping to set up and grow the business from a small operation in Nigeria to a business with operations in Ghana, Libya and South Africa and much expanding operations in Nigeria.
In addition I spent 3 years in Nigeria working for a marine EPC business with projects under management up to $300m improving the financial and management reporting and completing the implementation of new business systems.
Contracted as an Interim Financial Controller to lead the financial reporting, accounts payable and treasury management delivery for the newly established UAE based entity following the break-up of the Group’s international business. Tasked with supporting the implementation & operational management of the company’s finance systems in line with the new corporate structure and new business strategy.
Recruited initially to the role of Group Management Accountant, prior to a rapid promotion to Financial Controller.
Fully accountable for the preparation of Board Reports, including the monthly Vessel Utilisation reporting for 200 Vessels, project reports and consolidated monthly management pack.
Wider remit included the preparation of annual consolidated accounts, management of the annual audit and the preparation and consolidation of the group budget. Managed a finance team of 20 staff in the absence of the CFO and supported the outlying offices in Port Harcourt and Warri.
Led the implementation and ongoing maintenance of new group MIS system comprising of Infor Sun, Proactis and Cognos TM1
Established, managed and grew a personal accountancy and consultancy practice. Delivery was split between providing short-term contracting services and preparing accounts, tax returns etc, to a range of small businesses and individuals.
Initially hired into An Interim Regional Financial Controller EMEA role in March 2005, before experiencing a number of promotions, culminating in leadership responsibility as Regional Finance Director Western Europe & Africa, for the management of finances and finance teams across 16 Countries.
This encompassed 21 different trading entities, with a combined annual turnover of GBP £80M. Worked closely with the Regional Managers to set and implement the regional revenue and margin focused growth strategy. Tasked with the preparation, review, challenge and consolidation of monthly reporting, quarterly forecasting and annual budgets for the region.
Led the strategy to improve financial systems, revamp the finance team and training of staff to operate a 500 strong group with a number of satellite testing laboratories around the coast and in Johannesburg, while exercising great diplomacy with a working shareholder.
Adopted a hands-on management approach in West & North Africa as part of improving quality of financial information, including revenues, profits & cash-flow forecasting.
